Mosquito Control for Different Types of Insects
Depending upon where you live, the mosquito control that might be the most effective could take on different forms. For instance, in the northern states, Octenol is the primary attractant that is used to catch the mosquitoes; in the south, Lurex needs to be used because you are going after the Asian Tiger Mosquito. Striped, silver legs are the identifying feature of this mosquito, and they tend to be more difficult to eliminate than regular mosquitoes.
When Octenol is used as an attractant, it works because it simulates human breath. Not only does it attract mosquitoes, but it also attracts biting midges, black flies and sand flies. The good news is that if you buy a standard mosquito trap, it will successfully capture insects using either Lurex or Octenol.
The Lurex is simply a secondary attractant; it attracts the insects in the same way as your skin, and is perfect for insects that bite during the day. Insects are looking for a host on which to feed; when they are lured into coming in contact with these traps, they will be killed at once and will not reach the humans in the outdoor area or in your patio.
The breeding location of these insects deserves your attention. The Asian Tiger Mosquito, for instance, breeds in artificial containers that have water residue like tires, flower pots or small wading ponds. Make sure to put your traps in these areas to cut the insects off at the source; they will be eager to leave their resting or breeding area even on a hot day if they think that they can find a suitable host.
